Cargo
HD-Video, Sound, Colour, 7:03 Min., 2013
Cargo deals with the fetish character of commodity goods and the analogy between religious rituals and the secularized rites within our capitalist system. The script is inspired by „Cargo Cults“ and connects their believe in technology as god-given to our trust in science and progress. How do power structures translate onto the screen? Who is being forced and who is in charge within and without the picture frame? What is pleasure? Can I trust my initial reaction to what I see?
“Hail to the body! Hail to progress! Hail to knowledge! Knowledge is power, speed is power. I’m in everything. I overcame time and space. My face my legs, I overcame my physical body. Hail to the body! Hail to health! Let me stay clean! Let me be found in the most uncertain places! Reproduce me! Hail to the divine nature of Cargo! Distance is dead, there are no distances anymore. I’m where you are, I’m always in reach. Let’s stay in touch, for the sake of progress!”
Installation view, Hiscox Kunstpreis, Kunsthaus Hamburg, 2013
