Ein Fingerhut voll Utopien
2025, textile installation and performance, 45 min.; Die Gesandten, HD-Video, 22 min.; Rosanna Graf and Lisa Klosterkötter in collaboration with the Goldhauben group Braunau; Festival der Regionen, Braunau a.I., Austria
The project Ein Fingerhut voll Utopien (engl. A Thimbleful of Utopias) by Rosanna Graf and Lisa Klosterkötter explores the traditional, all-female Goldhauben (gold bonnets) and headscarf groups in the Braunau district in Austria, building a bridge between tradition and the future. Through conversations with the Goldhauben women about their customs and by envisioning utopias and dystopias, a video work was created («Die Gesandten», (engl. The Envoys)), along with a textile installation and a text-based performance developed in a collaborative workshop. The collective handwork opened up a space for storytelling inspired by feminist science fiction, echoing Le Guin’s vision of the crone as the ultimate carrier of human knowledge and experience. The project situates traditional female crafts as speculative tools for thinking about social transformation and intergenerational dialogue.
Presented during the Festival der Regionen in Braunau am Inn in June 2025, the work took the form of a participatory, multimedia happening combining tradition, speculative storytelling, and collective creation. In the video work Die Gesandten, ethnologists from an alien world encounter the Goldhauben women in the Braunau district, observing and reflecting about their rituals and gestures as remnants of a lost or future civilization.
Visitors of the festival were invited to watch the video work, listen to the readings while sitting at the textile object, and embroider their ideas into the communal garment designed to be worn by multiple people.
Performance: Rosanna Graf, Lisa Klosterkötter, Heidi Schwendtner, Angelika Gerner, Brigitte Wimmer, and other women from the Goldhauben group Bezirk Braunau.
