Insane Insights
Performance series, 2017-2018
This participative performance series deals with different versions and interpretations of the Tarot. Tarot is a set of 78 playing cards which is used for psychological purposes or divination. There are two basic explanatory models for it’s relevance as tool for finding answers. One is esoteric-spiritual, the other psychological. The esoteric or magic explanation is based on Carl Gustav Jung’s term of synchronicity, which sees a parallelism between the Tarot reading and events in the life of the questioner. The psychological model on the other side declares tarot reading as associative procedure, in which inner and outer processes are reflected through the images on the cards.
The medium Insane Insights examines this ratio and uses the authority of the Tarot to create a special, magical space. These confidential environments enable profound, intimate encounters between artist and spectator, encouraging the sharing of personal stories and intimate details.
Insane Insights 1: Journey of the Fool at Peephole
Instagram Residency at Peep Hole. The major arcana of the Tarot can be interpreted as the archetypical journey of the hero. In this case the hero is the fool. Insane Insights uses Instagram’s story mode to illustrate the fool’s journey with short videos. Within 12 hours the story is being continued a drop at a time.
Insane Insights 2: Artists in Bed at Schlafzimmer Sandrock, Hamburg
The bed as place where the artistic magic happens. In this performance the bed is becoming living – and workspace. Themes of sickness, creative work, liminal states and boundaries between private and professional life are examined and merged. During an intimate meeting with the performers (Verena Buttmann and Rosanna Graf) the spectator is being portrayed from outside and in. After pulling a card from the Tarot, their portrait is taken and complemented by the key word from the card’s reading.
Insane Insights 3: Bordkiosk Surprise at MS Seute Deern, Hamburg
The board shop of MS Seute Deern is transformed into the office of Insane Insights.
Visitors get a one-on-one reading. After choosing the topic (love or money), one question is answered by the Tarot. The portrait of the visitor is then taken (using Paint), complimented with crucial elements from the pulled cards. Then a magical potion is given, which either boosts the libido or helps attracting money.
