Primal_Centered_She
HD-Video, (without Sound), 4:19 min., 2016
A rule of thumb is a principle with broad application that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation. It is an easily learned and easily applied procedure for approximately calculating or recalling some value, or for making some determination. Magical thinking denotes the belief that one’s thoughts by themselves can bring about effects in the world or that thinking something corresponds with doing it.
The autobiographically inspired monologue describes the childish practice of securing the order of the world by performing a specific sequence of gazes.
“As in many of Graf’s works, Primal_Centered_She involves fictional characters engaged in poetic dialogue that influences the images on the screen. At times, an inset window appears that shows an outstretched hand blocking or measuring the sun from a beach — an allusion to a ‘rule of thumb’, an imprecise principle applied to make a determination. Later, the image of a group of bathers frolicking in the water is surrounded by comments, which recall social media. These are typeset in white, and engages in dialogue with commands, typeset in orange. The result is a poetic narrative, on perspective, measurement, causation, and magical thinking, that connects the mundane or personal to the cosmic.“
